Q: What language other than Spanish do you speak at the school? Do you have translation for English speakers?
Q: According to many media source, I hear Colombia is a very dangerous place. How safe is your city of Cartagena?
A: As a father of three teens and teen-to-be boys, I understand the deep concerns you and your family might have on your choice of a nation that has reputation of having safety issues. Nonetheless, I can testify how much Colombia was/is different than I expected to be. Ever since the president Uribe took his office almost 5 years ago, the nation has established a firm securities over major cities. Furthermore, stories of violence and para-militia groups are active in Southern part of Colombia (Mountainous and jungle area).
Particularly, the city of Cartagena (DTS site) is known to be the safest city in Colombia and is consider to be safer than any major cities in the States. Cartagena is beautifully situated (it is called pearl harbor of South America for its beauty) at the Caribbean coast of Colombia attracting millions of people every year for vacation, tourism, and cultural expositions. Currently, we have over 50 staffs from 14 different nations are working both short and long-term in our (YWAM) base in various ministries.
I am confident, as you do the cultural research on Colombia, you will be surprised how much Colombia has different images than you have heard about.
There is an internet community for Americans (and foreigners) and its website is www.poorbuthappy.org. I recommend you to check upon it.
However, I would like to assure you that caution is necessary. Wisdom is necessary. Prayer is necessary. And faith is necessary like in any other nations around the world.
